Modern Barn Conversion

Bespoke barn architecture

The brief of this mini-project was ‘To design a modern barn conversion with the focus on the various living spaces within the structure“.

The design process began with researching different materials to include in the design. Brick and Oak beams were a both materials that gave barn’s their feel and identity. After material research, the next step was to look into the shape of the barn. The prism shape was an essential element that gave barns their distinctive look.

After settling on the materials and shape, thought then had to go into the manufacturing process and how the barn shape could be achieved from Brick or Oak. Research into manufacturing processes showed that oak beams can be manufactured by steaming or glued laminated timber. This helped to decide on the final barn shape.
