Rolling Stone Pop-Up Store

Unique music shopping experience

Project brief: To design a pop-up store for an existing brand/company to promote and sell their products.

The Rolling Stone Magazine and Monster Cable were both brands that were identified that could collaborate together to offer a unique pop-up store experience that would give each brand a platform to bring their products to a wider audience.

The project started with a full analysis of the design situation and identification of user requirements. This stage included exploring key engagement points within the store and research into spacing and accessibility requirements.

The intention for the pop up store was to design the structure that would peak the interest of the public and increase awareness for both the Rolling Stone Magazine and Monster Cable brands.

Initial concepts of the space included two-floor designs that was eventually abandoned due to the additional difficulty of transporting the pop up store and incorporating an internal staircase with the required access for customers and staff.

Decisions on the store’s form and materials was influenced by both brand’s colours, typography and logos. The final structure’s cross-section matched the shape of Monster Cable’s logo and the colours/materials used included red, black, white and oak – resulting in an open and industrial aesthetic that tied into both brand visuals.

The sales floor was designed to double up as a stage for live performances from bands and artists which introduced a unique customer experience for the space. The store included: a sales counter; a product island to display Rolling Stone magazines, which was moveable for performances; a product desk to hold headphones and products on sale; and a lounging area with a sofa for customers to try products and listen to music.
